Your Mold Questions, Answered on Video

Short videos on the questions we hear most. Each one links to the page with the full answer, and every claim points back to the EPA, the CDC, or the industry standard.

These are the videos on our YouTube channel. We made them because the same questions come up on nearly every call, and some things are easier to show than to write. If you would rather talk to a person, call (267) 828-9088.

Mold Remediation in Gettysburg, PA: Every Step, Start to Finish

This hand-drawn walkthrough follows a mold job from the first call to the last step. It covers the inspection, finding the water, containment and HEPA air filtration, removal, cleaning, and drying by the meter instead of by touch. It follows ANSI/IICRC S520, the industry standard for professional mold remediation. For the written version, read how mold remediation works.

Find the Water Before You Touch the Mold

Mold is the symptom. Water is the problem. It might be a gutter dumping against the foundation, a slow plumbing leak, or a humid basement. The EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control, so we look for the water before we touch the mold. Clean the mold without fixing the water, and it comes back. If the water came from a burst pipe or a flood, read our page on water damage and drying.

Do You Need a Mold Test?

If you can see the mold, you usually do not need to pay for a test. The EPA says sampling is usually unnecessary when mold is visible. Testing earns its cost when you smell mold but cannot find it, after a leak or a flood, when you are buying or selling a house, or when you want to confirm a remediation job is done. There is no federal limit for mold spores, so no house passes or fails a mold test. For more, see mold inspection and testing, how to read mold test results, and whether home test kits are accurate.

Why a Basement Smells Musty Every Summer

In summer, warm humid air comes down into the basement and hits cool stone and block walls. The moisture condenses, and the humidity climbs. The EPA says to keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent, and a simple hygrometer tells you where you stand. White powder on a stone or block wall is often efflorescence, not mold. Read the basement mold removal page, the guide on a musty basement smell with no visible mold, and the guide on efflorescence versus mold. For the old stone and block foundations behind this, see what we see in Gettysburg homes.
