Technician cleaning the inside of an HVAC air duct

The Best HVAC Duct Mold Cleaning in the Gettysburg Area

There's dark dust around the supply vents, or the house smells musty every time the air kicks on. Maybe the AC quit while you were away last summer. We clean ducts for homes and businesses, and we'll tell you straight whether yours actually need it.

How a Duct Job Goes

Six Steps, Moisture First

  1. Find the Moisture

Mold in ductwork almost always starts with water: a clogged condensate drain, a coil that sweats, ducts running through a damp crawl space or a hot attic, or a system that sat off through a humid week. That gets found and fixed first.

  2. Inspect the System

We look at the supply and return ducts, the registers, the blower, the evaporator coil, and the drain pan. Some systems need a few ducts cleaned. Some need the air handler cleaned too. Some need neither.

  3. Protect the House or Building

Registers get covered and the system is put under negative pressure with HEPA filtration, so what we knock loose goes into our equipment and not into your rooms.

  4. Clean the Ducts

Brushes break the debris loose while a HEPA vacuum pulls it out. Flex duct that's moldy or torn often makes more sense to replace than to clean, and we'll tell you when that's the case.

  5. Clean the Coil and Drain Pan

The coil and pan are where moisture and growth usually start. They get cleaned, and the drain line gets cleared so water leaves the way it's supposed to.

  6. Verify and Put It Back

Visual check of the cleaned sections, registers back on, system running. Then we go over what keeps it from coming back.

Cleaning the ducts without fixing why they got wet is paying for the same job twice.
What It Costs

What Air Duct Mold Cleaning Costs

$600 to $2,000

Typical planning range for mold remediation involving ductwork in the Gettysburg area. Standard duct cleaning without mold runs $275 to $500. Mold involving the HVAC equipment itself, like the air handler and coil, runs $2,000 to $10,000 or more. These are not quotes.

How Much Ductwork

A few runs off one system is a different job from a whole house or a building with several units.

Duct Type

Metal duct cleans well. Moldy flex duct and duct board often need replacing instead.

The Equipment

Whether the coil, blower, and drain pan need cleaning too.

Access

Ducts in a tight attic, a crawl space, or above a drop ceiling take longer.

The Moisture Fix

A clogged drain line is cheap. Ducts sweating in a wet crawl space are a bigger fix.

Residential or Commercial

Commercial systems are priced after a walkthrough.

The number you can count on comes after the inspection, in writing, before work starts.

Full Mold Removal Cost Breakdown

When Duct Cleaning Is Worth It

If the HVAC ran while there was mold in the house, if the coil and drain pan have growth, or if the ducts are visibly dirty or moldy, it's worth doing. After a remediation job, it's often the last step so spores that got pulled into the system don't keep circulating.

When It Isn't

If nobody has found where the moisture is coming from, cleaning the ducts is premature. Be careful with a quote that jumps to thousands of dollars of duct work, sealing, or UV lights before anyone has checked the basement, the crawl space, or the drain pan. We'll tell you if your ducts don't need us.

Why Ducts Grow Mold

Your HVAC system moves a lot of air, and in a Gettysburg summer that air is humid. When the AC cools it, water condenses on the coil and drips into a drain pan. If that drain clogs, the pan overflows. If the ducts run through a damp crawl space or a hot attic, they sweat. If the system shuts off while the family is away, humidity climbs inside the ducts with nothing moving it out.

Dust in the ducts gives mold something to eat. Moisture gives it the rest. That’s why duct mold almost always comes with a moisture problem somewhere else in the house.

What We Check

  • The coil and drain pan. The most common starting point. We look for standing water, slime, and growth.
  • The condensate drain line. Clogged lines are cheap to clear and cause a lot of trouble.
  • Ducts in the crawl space and attic. Sweating or wet insulation on the outside of the duct usually means trouble on the inside.
  • The registers and the first few feet of duct. Where growth and dust show up first.
  • The rest of the house. If the basement or crawl space is wet, the ducts will keep pulling that air in.

Duct Sealing

Leaky ductwork pulls air from wherever the leaks are, and in a lot of Gettysburg homes that’s a damp crawl space, a basement, or a hot attic. We also seal ducts, including aerosol duct sealing, which seals leaks from the inside without tearing out walls or ceilings. Like cleaning, it comes after the moisture is fixed, and we’ll tell you whether your system actually leaks enough to be worth sealing.

Homes and Businesses

We clean ducts in houses and in commercial buildings. Commercial systems are bigger, often with several rooftop or ceiling units, and the work gets planned around the building. Read commercial mold removal for more on how those jobs go.

Next Steps

If you’re not sure whether the ducts are the problem or just carrying it, start with a mold inspection. For the bigger picture on humidity and air in the house, read indoor air quality. Frequently Asked Questions About Air Duct Mold

Is The Black Dust Around my Vents Mold?

Sometimes. Often it's plain dust and soot sticking to a cold register, especially when warm, humid air hits it. If it wipes off dry and comes back slowly, it's probably dust. If it's fuzzy, smells musty, or comes back fast after cleaning, or the vents sweat in summer, have the system looked at.

Should I Run my AC if I Think There's Mold in The Ducts?

The EPA says not to run the HVAC if you suspect it's contaminated with mold, because it can spread spores through the house. Turn it off and have it inspected.

Do You Clean Ducts For Businesses?

Yes. We clean ductwork in homes and commercial buildings. Commercial systems are bigger and often have several units, so they're priced after a walkthrough. See our commercial mold removal page for the kinds of buildings we work in.

Will Duct Cleaning Fix The Musty Smell in my House?

Only if the ducts are where the smell is coming from. Most of the time a musty house traces back to a damp basement, a crawl space, or a hidden leak, and the ducts are just carrying the smell. That's why we find the moisture first.
