Why Does My Basement Smell Musty When There Is No Visible Mold?

You have looked in every corner and found nothing. The smell is still there. Here is where the problem usually hides.

Your basement smells like a wet towel, you have looked everywhere, and you cannot find a thing.

The Straight Answer: A musty smell with nothing visible usually means moisture is hiding somewhere, and sometimes mold is growing where you cannot see it. The EPA says you may suspect hidden mold if a building smells moldy but you cannot see the source. Find where the smell is strongest, check the humidity, and fix the moisture before you buy anything to cover the smell. If it is still there after you have dried the obvious spots, call us.

Is a Musty Smell a Sign of Mold?

Often, yes. The CDC says mold can smell musty and that if you see or smell mold, you should remove it.

But your nose cannot tell you what is behind the smell. It could be mold in a wall. It could be a stack of damp cardboard, a wet carpet pad, or a floor drain that has dried out. All of them get called musty. What they have in common is that something is damp, and finding the damp spot is the whole job.

Where Do We Look First?

In a basement that looks dry, the same places come up over and over:

  • Stored boxes, books, and fabric. Cardboard against a stone wall soaks up moisture and starts to smell. We move things off the walls first.
  • Carpet and finished walls. Carpet on a slab and drywall tight against a foundation wall hold moisture where you cannot see it. The EPA lists the back of drywall, wallpaper, and paneling as places hidden mold grows.
  • Stone and block walls. Old fieldstone and block wick ground moisture. White crust on the wall is usually efflorescence, a mineral deposit and a moisture clue, not mold. Our guide on efflorescence versus mold shows the difference.
  • Floor drains and the sump pit. A dry floor drain trap lets sewer gas up. An open sump pit with standing water adds humidity.
  • Plumbing and appliances. The water heater, the washer hoses, a supply line, and the dryer vent. Slow leaks run for months.
  • The HVAC system. If the smell gets worse when the air runs, we look at the air handler, the coil, the drain pan, and the ducts. See our air duct mold cleaning page.

Why Does It Smell Worse in Summer?

Because warm, humid air meets a cold wall. A fieldstone wall sits at ground temperature. When summer air gets in, the moisture condenses on the wall and the wall sweats. That is why a basement can smell fine in February and like a damp cave in July.

The EPA says to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A cheap hygrometer in the basement tells you where you stand. Our guide on humidity in old Gettysburg basements goes deeper on stone foundations.

Will a Dehumidifier Fix It?

It helps with humidity, and the EPA says to use dehumidifiers when needed. It does not fix a wet wall or a leak. If yours fills every day, that is the basement telling you moisture is coming in from somewhere. Find the somewhere.

Run it with a drain line if you can. Keep the filter and the bucket clean, because a dirty dehumidifier can smell on its own.

What About Odor Eliminators and Ozone Machines?

Skip them. Sprays cover a smell for a few days while the cause keeps going. Ozone machines are worse. The EPA says ozone does not effectively remove mold or other biological pollutants at levels that meet health standards, and that when inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs.

If the smell comes back after you cover it, the moisture is still there.

When Should You Call Us?

Call if any of these are true:

  • The smell is still there after you have dried the obvious spots and moved things off the walls.
  • There was a leak or flood and anything stayed wet more than 24 to 48 hours.
  • Drywall is soft, stained, or bubbling.
  • You think the growth covers more than about 10 square feet. The EPA says larger areas call for a professional.
  • The smell tracks with the HVAC.

An inspection is a moisture meter, a thermal camera, and a walk of the house, inside and out. The CDC does not recommend routine mold testing, and when mold is visible, the EPA says sampling is usually unnecessary. We tell you up front if a lab test will not change what you do next. The cost page has planning ranges. For the housing, soil, and weather behind Gettysburg cellars, see our Gettysburg mold remediation page.

More Questions About Musty Basements

Can a basement smell musty with no mold at all?

Yes. Damp cardboard, wet carpet, a dried-out floor drain, or a wall that is wet but not yet growing anything can all smell musty or sour. The smell tells you something is damp. It does not tell you what. A moisture meter finds the damp spot faster than a nose does.

Why does my dehumidifier fill up every day?

It is pulling a lot of moisture out of the air, and that moisture is coming from somewhere. In a Gettysburg basement it is often the stone or block walls, a damp floor, or a leak. The dehumidifier is managing the humidity. It is not fixing the source.

Is the smell near my floor drain mold?

Often it is sewer gas, not mold. A floor drain has a water trap that blocks sewer gas, and the trap can dry out. Pouring a bucket of water down the drain refills it. If the smell is gone in an hour, that was it.

Should I air the basement out by opening the windows?

Only if the outdoor air is drier than the air inside. In a humid Gettysburg summer it usually is not, and open windows bring in damp air that condenses on cold walls. Check the humidity first.
