If you’ve found mold and don’t know who to call, start here. This page covers how to tell local companies apart, what to check before you hire anyone in Pennsylvania, and which towns we cover from our office at 498 Wye Alley.
Who to Call for Mold in Gettysburg
Who Should I Call for Mold Remediation in Gettysburg, PA?
Call a company that will find the water first and put the scope in writing before any work starts. That's how we work. Gettysburg Mold Remediation Pros is owned by Chuck Dalem, based at 498 Wye Alley in Gettysburg, and has been doing this since 2012. We handle inspection, containment, removal, drying, and light repairs on homes in the borough, out in Cumberland and Straban Townships, and across Adams County. Call (267) 828-9088 and tell us what you're seeing.
How Do I Know a Mold Company Is Actually Local?
Ask for a street address, not just a phone number, and ask who will actually do the work. Ours is 498 Wye Alley, Gettysburg, PA 17325, and the number is (267) 828-9088. Local should mean the same people answer the phone, do the inspection, run the job, and come back if something isn't right. Chuck still goes out on jobs. If the person on the phone can't tell you who will be in your basement, keep asking.
I Need Mold Remediation ASAP. What Should I Do Right Now?
Call us at (267) 828-9088 and tell us if water is still coming in. While you wait: stop the water if you can, shut off the HVAC if the mold is near a vent or return, keep the door to that room closed, and don't scrub or spray it. Take photos for insurance. If a pipe burst or the basement flooded, drying in the first 24 to 48 hours matters more than anything else, so tell us that up front.
Do You Handle Both Mold and Water Damage?
Yes. Chuck started out on the water side as a project manager for a national water restoration franchise, and he holds IICRC WRT certification for drying along with AMRT for mold. Most mold we see around Gettysburg started as water nobody dried in time, so we do both: extraction, structural drying with commercial dehumidifiers and air movers, then mold removal if growth has already started. One crew and one written scope, with no handoff between companies.
Is There a Company Around Here That Does Mold Testing and Removal?
We do both. We inspect, take air samples when they'll answer a real question, and do the remediation. That raises a fair question about conflict of interest, so here's how we handle it: if we can see the mold, we'll tell you a test isn't needed. And if you want an independent inspector to run the clearance test after our work, we welcome it and will schedule around them. Our mold testing FAQ has more.
Do You Do the Repairs After the Mold Is Removed?
Light repairs, yes: drywall, flooring, and painting, so you're not left with a gutted room. Repairs are itemized separately in the written scope, so you can see what's remediation and what's putting the room back. Bigger rebuilds go to trusted trades we coordinate with. On jobs in Taneytown, Maryland, we handle inspection, drying, and remediation only.
Checking a Mold Company in Pennsylvania
Are Mold Removal Contractors Licensed in Adams County?
No. Pennsylvania doesn't license mold remediation, and neither does Adams County. What you can check: a Home Improvement Contractor registration with the PA Attorney General, which anyone doing $5,000 or more a year of residential work needs, proof of insurance, and real certifications. We're nationally certified through the IICRC, ACAC, and NORMI, including IICRC AMRT and WRT. You can look up any contractor's registration at hic.attorneygeneral.gov or by calling 1-888-520-6680.
What Certifications Should a Mold Company Have?
Look for IICRC AMRT (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician), the core mold certification taught from the IICRC S520 standard, and WRT for water drying. We hold both, plus additional national mold certifications through ACAC and NORMI. The certificate matters less than whether the crew follows S520 on your job: containment, HEPA air filtration, physical removal of moldy material, and drying before anything gets closed up. Ask any company to walk you through those steps.
How Do I Compare Quotes From Different Mold Companies?
Line them up on scope, not just price. A solid quote names the moisture source, the area affected, the containment level, what gets removed versus cleaned, how drying is confirmed, and which repairs are included. If one quote never mentions the water source, it isn't comparable. If another jumps straight to whole-house treatment or duct sealing before anyone has found the moisture, get a second opinion. We put all of this in writing before work starts.
Can a Company Just Fog or Spray the Mold Instead of Removing It?
Fogging, ozone, and spray-only treatments without physical removal fall outside IICRC S520, the industry standard of care. Dead mold can still cause reactions, so it has to come out, and a fogger doesn't dry a wet stud. We cut out moldy porous materials, HEPA-vacuum and clean the framing, dry everything, and use antimicrobials after removal as a supplement, not a substitute.
What Red Flags Should I Watch for When Hiring a Mold Company?
Starting work without a written contract, which Pennsylvania requires on home improvement jobs over $500. A deposit over one third of the price on a contract over $5,000, which state law limits. Scare talk about "toxic mold" before anyone has looked. Promises that insurance will pay. Quotes that never say where the water came from. A pitch for a test when the mold is plainly visible. None of these prove a bad company, but each one deserves a question.
Can I Clean Small Mold Spots Myself Instead of Hiring Someone?
Often, yes. The EPA says a patch under about 10 square feet, roughly 3 by 3 feet, is usually a homeowner job. Scrub hard surfaces with detergent and water, wear gloves and an N-95, and dry the area fully. Call a pro if it's larger, came from sewage or a flood, might be in the HVAC, or someone in the house has health concerns. Skip bleach on drywall and wood. The EPA's mold cleanup guide covers the details.
Where We Work Around Gettysburg
Do You Serve Cumberland and Straban Townships or Just the Borough?
Both. A Gettysburg mailing address can mean a house on Broadway or Ridge Avenue in town, a newer home off Herr's Ridge Road between Route 30 and Route 116, or a farmhouse out in Cumberland or Straban Township. We work on all of them. The building is different in each, so the inspection is too: plaster and stone in the borough, finished basements in postwar homes, wells and outbuildings out in the townships.
Do You Serve Fairfield as Well as Gettysburg?
Yes. Fairfield is a short drive out the Fairfield Road (Route 116), and we cover it along with Carroll Valley next door. Homes out that way range from older houses in the borough to farmhouses and wooded lots with crawl spaces and well water. The work is the same as in town: find the moisture, contain, remove, dry, and verify. Call (267) 828-9088 to set up an inspection.
Who Do People Use for Mold Cleanup in Hanover, PA?
We cover Hanover and Penn Township from our Gettysburg office, straight east on Route 116. Hanover has everything from older borough rowhomes with shared walls to newer subdivisions, and the calls there look a lot like ours in Gettysburg: musty basements, leaks behind finished walls, attic venting problems. Our Hanover page covers the details.
How Far From Gettysburg Do You Travel?
Our office is at 498 Wye Alley in Gettysburg, and we travel up to roughly 50 miles. Most of our work stays in Adams County and close by: Gettysburg, Hanover, Littlestown, New Oxford, Carroll Valley, Fairfield, Biglerville, and Taneytown, Maryland. Our service area page has the full list.
Do You Handle Commercial Buildings in Gettysburg?
Yes. We work in office buildings, workshops, medical plazas, car dealerships, retail stores, supermarkets, and restaurants. Commercial jobs are priced after an on-site walkthrough and a written scope, and we plan containment and scheduling around your business. Commercial and insurance-mandated jobs carry a 2 to 5 year warranty. Our commercial mold page has more.
Can I Get an Inspection Before I Decide to Hire Anyone?
Yes. The inspection is its own step, and booking it doesn't commit you to anything. We do a visual walk-through, take moisture readings, use thermal imaging when it helps, and give you written findings and a scope. A typical planning range for that around Gettysburg is $300 to $500. That isn't a quote: your price depends on the size of the house and how many areas need checking.
